Part-Time Academic (INFO 6870: Global Histories of Disputed Archives & the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage) - Fall 2026 Posting Number PTAP3266P Department/Unit Information Science Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities The sessional instructor will teach the online elective Global Histories of Disputed Archives & the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage course (INFO 6870) in the Master of Information (MI) program during the 2026 Fall term. The course is scheduled for one 3 hour period per week, September – December 2026 (Thursdays 11:35am-2:25pm ADT). Course Description: This course is intended to provide students with a foundation for the further exploration of ARM (Archives & Records Management) and cultural heritage practice as it pertains to disputed archives and the safeguarding of cultural heritage. The course introduces relevant principles and concepts from the ARM and cultural heritage disciplines to show how these underpin practice. Along the way, it examines the place of archives in the broader cultural heritage and information environment; explores a cross-disciplinary literature on archives/the archive; and provides practical skills in conducting oral history interviews and deploying case studies. Overall, students will learn about the laws, systems and structures that undergird how archives and cultural heritage is safeguarded and disputed. All instructors report to the Director of Information Programs. Qualifications/Requirements of Position Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach and apply interdisciplinary approaches, including case study methodology and oral history methods, and to critically engage the political, socio-economic, and cultural factors shaping archival and heritage practices. Prior graduate-level teaching experience in archives, cultural heritage, or a related field is strongly preferred. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and decolonization—particularly in relation to Indigenous and global contexts—is expected. Applicants must hold A PhD in Information Science, Anthropology, Archives, History Museums Studies, Sociology, or a closely related field. We will also consider a candidates who are in the final stages of doctoral completion. An applicant with an MLIS degree (or equivalent) and demonstratable significant professional and/or research experience in foundational frameworks of archives, cultural heritage, and related legal and policy environments will be considered. The successful candidate will have expertise in global histories of archives and cultural heritage, including issues of displacement, repatriation, restitution, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage in contexts of conflict, colonialism, and decolonization. Familiarity with international conventions, heritage governance, and archival theory is essential. Please list the course number in your cover letter.
