  • <p>The Langley School District is situated on the traditional unceded territories of the Matsqui, Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo First Nations.

  • Whether you're a seasoned educator or embarking on your journey in the field of education, Langley School District offers ample opportunities for professional growth and development.<br></br></p><p><b><u>Position Summary</u></b></p><p> Under the direction of the LSS director, or designate, the District Visual Language interpreter aids and support students, staff, and families in the district.
  • The Educational Interpreter works in conjunction with and under the supervision of the classroom and the hearing resource teacher. </p><p> Depending on the nature of the students, the emphasis of the program is to provide students with the appropriate social, motor, language and living skills for them to become integrated into the school system and community. </p><p> The incumbent performs a variety of tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Judgement and independence is exercised in handling assignments and determining work methods.
  • Work is reviewed periodically for quality of service and for adherence of established standards of performance in connection to WAVLI code of ethics. </p><p><b><u>Position Duties and Responsibilities</u></b></p><ul><li>Works as itinerant staff moving between district sites as needed.</li><li> Interprets and translates into American Sign Language for deaf and hard of hearing parents, staff, or others in the community at meetings and other functions as needed.</li><li>Works collaboratively with district staff, classroom teacher and hearing resource teacher to support the learning and access for staff and students as needed.</li><li>Participate in the development and implementation of the student's IEP goals in consultation with teachers, administrators, special education staff and parents/guardians.</li><li>Prepares as necessary for interpreting: educational material, vocabulary and concepts under teacher direction.
  • Follows up to ensure student(s) comprehension of instruction.</li><li>Assists in the planning, development, creation, and modification of curriculum and classroom material to suit the student and/or groups’ needs.</li><li>Assists students in the utilization of a wide range of special equipment including instructional aid communications equipment, standard school cafeteria kitchen equipment, office equipment, gym and playground equipment.</li><li>Learn and incorporate new technology relevant to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and community.</li><li>Facilitate and encourage positive interactions between students and school staff and assist in liaison with parents, social workers and others.</li><li>Ability to understand and work with curriculum at the appropriate grade level(s).</li><li>Ability to be flexible in order to meet the varying academic, social, emotional and behavioural needs of students.</li></ul><p> </p><ul><li>Other duties as related to the students on caseload as determined by classroom and the hearing resource teacher.<br></br><br></br></li></ul><p><b><u> Required Qualifications and Experience</u></b></p><ul><li>Must have minimum 3 years’ experience as an interpreter.</li><li>Demonstrates a very high level of fluency in ASL required.</li><li>Successful completion of a two (2) year post-secondary program in Sign Language Interpretation and at least one year of related experience. </li><li>Active member of Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI), and commitment to adhere to the WAVLI code of ethics. </li><li>Knowledge of Deaf culture and community resources. </li><li>Experience working and/or interacting with Deaf or Hard of Hearing people, especially children. </li><li>Understanding of the language implications in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and adults. </li><li>Ability to adjust the signing, education and communication levels required, in accordance with students and adults needs.</li><li>Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as a member of an educational team. </li><li>Effective interpersonal skills. </li><li>Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and reliable transportation, as travel to various sites in the School District is common.</li><li>Ability to work and collaborate as a member of a team. </li><li>Appreciation of the confidential nature of all information relating to pupils, parents and teachers. </li></ul><p> <br></br></p><ul> </ul> <p><strong><u>PLEASE NOTE</u></strong></p> <ul> <li>In accordance with the Criminal Record Review Act, successful applicants will be required to consent to a Criminal Record Check prior to employment. </li></ul><ul><li><b>We thank you for your interest in the Langley School District; however, only those persons selected for interviews will be contacted.</b></li> </ul>
