About the Role

  • Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Mental Health Therapist works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team, school administrators, community service providers and caregivers to provide timely, wrap-around clinical service delivery in the Comprehensive School-Based Mental Health Program in Alexis Nakota Sioux. The Mental Health Therapist adheres to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific discipline and applies the principles of evidence-informed practice to all aspects of this work. The Mental Health Therapist works within a multidisciplinary school team to support, coordinate and deliver universal, targeted and indicated mental health programming while leading all aspects of clinical service delivery in the Specialized Therapeutic Classroom.   • Conduct comprehensive bio-psycho-social spiritual mental health assessments of assigned preschoolers, children and adolescents.
  • Develop a treatment plan and formulate a diagnosis, when applicable, using the DSM-5-TR and other diagnostic tools as appropriate.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to support the patient in achieving therapeutic goals utilizing a variety of developmentally appropriate treatment approaches.
  • Make appropriate referrals to in-house or external clinical programs/services to inform treatment planning and diagnostic clarification.
  • Carry out case management functions including convening case conferences and liaising with community services and other professionals involved with the client and family.
  • Advocate on behalf of the child and family as appropriate.
  • Be an active and contributing member of a multi-disciplinary clinical team, focused on assessment, treatment, diagnostic formulation and referral services, including transition to community partners and services.
  • Provide preceptorship for student placements.
  • Engage in research and best practice.
  • Comply with CASA standards and vision.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in all aspects of the discipline including clinical practice.
    • Demonstrated ability to practice culturally safe therapeutic interventions.
    • Excellent assessment and treatment skills.
    • Proficient case management skills.
    • Training and clinical experience working with families and CFS is an asset.
    • Strong critical thinking skills.
    • Strong grasp of the principles of evidence-based practice.
    • Knowledge and experience in supporting children and adolescents who have experienced trauma.
    • Proficiency in therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Crisis Intervention, Narrative Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy.
    • Training or experience in play therapy and DBT is considered an asset.
    • Experience supporting the mental health of youth who identify as LGBTQ2S+.
    • Ability to work autonomously and independently, and to prioritize work activities.

    Conditions of Employment

    • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Check. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
    • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) as well as physical ability to perform all interventions.
    • Working Conditions
    • Ability to participate in traditional Indigenous ceremony, protocol, events and activities.
    • Must be prepared for hybrid work. This includes working from home, in-office at CASA Edmonton locations and remotely in the partner communities CASA Mental Health - Indigenous Services serves.
    • Applicants must have access to a confidential workspace when working remotely.
    • May be required to engage in floor activities with children or youth.
    • Manual dexterity to use mouse, keyboard, computer and other office equipment.
    • Adequate vision and hearing to interact with patients and team members.
    • Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
    • Must be able and willing to lift and carry up to 10 pounds.
    • Work hours may include evenings and weekend, as program needs dictate.
    • Daily travel requires employees to have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
