Position Title
Part-Time Academic (SLWK 3101: History of Canadian Social Work) - Fall 2026 Posting Number PTAP3332P Department/Unit Social Work Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching SLWK 3101 “History of Canadian Social Work” on campus, in the Fall term from September to December 2026. Classes will be held Wednesdays from 14:35-17:25. Course description: This course offers a critical examination of Canadian social work’s early development and history from the 17th to 21st centuries. The implications of colonization, industrialization, and urbanization driven by the colonial project are unpacked. Relations between European settlers and Indigenous first peoples as well as people of African descent, and Francophone peoples are situated as foundational for understanding how colonialism and ‘othering’ have shaped Western social work, concepts of helping, and the development of social policies and programs. The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including preparing and delivering lectures, grading of assignments, and consultation with students. In addition, the part-time academic should expect to be engaged in course preparations for one-two months preceding course delivery. Qualifications/Requirements of Position Extensive experience in social work (or related fields), as well as knowledge of the history of social work and social welfare and competence in policy analysis, is required. A Master of Social Work degree, or higher, and previous teaching experience. Salary Range/Pay Rate Per CUPE Collective Agreement
