Position Title

Part-Time Academic (POLI 3446.03: Politics of Crime) - Winter 2027 Posting Number PTAP3326P Department/Unit Political Science Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities This part-time academic will be required to teach POLI 3446.03, Politics of Crime during Winter Term 2027: January-April 2027, currently scheduled in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:35 AM-12:55PM. Course description: This course explores the relations between politics and criminal justice, with attention to how political approaches to crime are instrumental to the racial and socio-economic hierarchies and systemic discrimination that structure social relations. It addresses why crime continues to be a major political issue, nationally and internationally, and how various approaches to its control materially effect particular social groups. The course will also cover influential theoretical works and critical analyses of a range of topics, including criminality and punishment; law enforcement and police violence; restorative vs retributive justice; racial profiling; criminalization of poverty; mass-incarceration; and the over-representation of Black and Indigenous peoples in the prison system. The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures and test preparation. The position reports to the Chair of the Department. Qualifications/Requirements of Position Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD, or nearly completed PhD, in Political Science and a strong knowledge of the topic. Previous university-level teaching on this topic will be an asset. All offers of employment as a Part-Time Academic are conditional upon sufficient student enrolment in the course and approval by the University. Salary Range/Pay Rate Per CUPE Collective Agreement
