  • Course description: This course is designed to prepare teacher candidates to teach students Social Science at the Grade 7-12level in a thoughtful and interactive way. It focuses primarily on Social Science at the Senior level.Teacher candidates will explore a variety of teaching techniques, which are useful in teaching and assessing today's students as they experience the current Social Science curriculum. Teacher candidates will also have an opportunity to engage in inquiry and examine unique ways for presenting Social Science content. Examining classroom practice and methods, curriculum and program materials are an important component of the process. As well, the interdependence of these components, their link with theory and contemporary issues will be considered. Techniques such as discussion, presentations, inquiry, and active participation that incorporate individual and group learning will be employed. Opportunities for sharing of ideas and experiences from field placements will be provided in the context of the classroom setting.
  • Two important ideas that will be emphasized throughout the program are: how to make Social Science meaningful for children, and how to promote positive attitudes.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates: 1. Should possess a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience, 2. Must demonstrate currency and mastery in the course subject matter; 3. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, including online teaching as relevant; 4. Must demonstrate evidence of knowledge and practice of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion; 5. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching and leading teachers/teacher-candidates' professional learning; 6. An Ontario Teaching certificate is an asset

Attend a pre-course planning/preparation meeting with the course instructional team, attend MT All-Instructor Meetings (AIM) and submit course syllabus as requested by the department.
