Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Day Camp Counsellor- Recreation is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of summer camps, providing a safe, engaging, and enriching experience for all participants. The role includes supporting program delivery, supervising campers, and ensuring a positive camp environment that promotes fun, learning, and teamwork. ACCOUNTABILITIES: Program Delivery Assist in planning and leading camp activities, including sports, arts and crafts, team-building exercises, and other recreational activities. Support the implementation of scheduled camp programs, ensuring they are engaging and inclusive. Adapt activities to meet the needs and interests of all campers. Camper Supervision Provide active supervision to ensure camper safety at all times. Foster a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, encouraging camper participation and collaboration. Respond to camper needs, including providing guidance and conflict resolution as necessary. Health and Safety Ensure a safe environment by following all health and safety protocols. Monitor camper well-being, including proper hydration, sunscreen application, and injury prevention. Respond to emergencies, administer first aid if certified, and report incidents as per camp procedures. Team Collaboration Work collaboratively with other camp staff to ensure the success of the program. Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and parents when required. Attend all training sessions, staff meetings, and debriefs. Administrative Tasks Maintain accurate attendance records and incident reports. Assist with camp setup, cleanup, and inventory management. Provide feedback on programs and suggest improvements. WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a temporary summer position from June 23 to August 29, 2025 at 30 hours per week. This position requires long hours of both indoor and outdoor activity. This position requires individuals to work in close proximity to others in a fast-paced and sometimes crowded environment, often outdoors. The work can be physically taxing and requires good mobility. This position requires individuals to wear appropriate footwear and clothing (i.e. close-toe shoes and pants/capris only). EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered. Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Completed some high school. Standard First Aid + CPR & AED (Intermediate First Aid). Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. Police check with vulnerable sector search Child intervention check Experience and Knowledge: Previous summer camp experience (or experience in other children/youth programs) is an asset Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values Skills and Capabilities: Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols. Work within the total camp program and cooperate with other staff members. Flexible and have a good disposition. Able to maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership. Able to lift, carry or move up to 29 lbs.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $17.45 to $21.81 with a maximum of $26.17. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
