Part-Time Academic (VTEC 0225: Laboratory and Alternative Pet Medicine Lab) - Winter 2027 Posting Number PTAP3370P Department/Unit Animal Science and Aquaculture Location Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities Job Summary This part-time Academic will teach in person labs in a practical clinical setting focused on specialized animal sources, barriers and containment, bio-hazards, special requirements of various species and common techniques used on alternate and laboratory animal species. This course is being offered in the Winter Term (January – April 2027) and is currently scheduled on Mondays from 2.35pm – 4.25pm, Tuesdays from 1.35pm – 3.25pm and Fridays from 10.35am – 12.25pm. This position reports to the Chair of the Department. VTEC 0225 Laboratory Animal and Alternative Pet Medicine Course Description This course enables the student to apply the principles of clinical nursing to alternate and exotic pets as well as to common laboratory animal species. It also enables the graduate to enter the research facility and, with supplemental training and experience, prepares the graduate for certification with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences. Topics include specialized animal sources, barriers and containment, bio-hazards, special requirements of various species, handling of and common techniques used on alternate and laboratory animal species, and the ethics of animal research and of wild animal species as pets. A Registered Veterinary Technician Member in good standing of the Eastern Veterinary Technician Association and the N.S.V.M.A. Two years of companion animal private Veterinary practice At least one year in an academic teaching environment Desirable attributes include excellent oral and written communication, collegiality, organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as an excellent ability to work in a team environment. Salary Range/Pay Rate Per CUPE Collective Agreement
