Overview

The EDBE 8P74 Professional Collaborative Communities instructor will professionally bring to life the content and knowledge by implementing curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. Instructors (PI) are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to our unconscious biases, and encourage inclusivity. In addition, PIs will exemplify competencies relevant to specific methods and foundations courses being taught while modeling the Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the Ontario College of Teachers.

Duties

The duties and nominal hours for Education Instructors are established by the employer. The nominal workload is normally made up of scheduled contact time with students as well as non-contact time. This includes but is not limited to preparation of lectures, class instruction, student consultation, marking and grading, and course administration, including grade appeals and cases of academic dishonesty. Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them. Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class. Complete required Gender and Sexual Violence supports for teacher candidates training. Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel; Act as instructor and be responsible for the successful delivery of all aspects of this course including but not limited to: Leading structured discussions and activities that connect practicum experiences to professional learning, classroom practice, and educational theory. Guiding teacher candidates in reflecting on their beliefs, experiences, and emerging professional identities through activities, discussions, and assigned tasks. Assisting candidates with interpreting and applying program learning from coursework and practicum placements to real classroom contexts, including classroom management, communication with stakeholders, and inclusive teaching practices. Supporting candidates in developing skills for communicating with colleagues, administrators, parents/guardians, and other educational partners within professional learning communities. Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time. Contact time includes all classes as scheduled. The non-contact time includes preparation of lecture materials, managing the learning management system(s), student consultation, marking or grading, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required such as attending required meetings such as beginning of program meeting, sessional instructor meetings and relevant professional development. Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs. Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT; Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings. Work collegially and collaborate/instruct with the Practicum Advisor; Mentor teacher candidates for practicum placements (I/S) with reference to the Teacher Education Program Handbook. To submit final grades by deadlines.

Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years teaching experience; Master’s degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization; Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers Must be in good standing with the OCT at the time of appointment; Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education; Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment; Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses; Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners. Experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners; Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery.
