BCIT’s School of Transportation is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Faculty, Marine Engineering to instruct/facilitate Ship Construction, Naval Architecture, Drafting, Engineering Knowledge, Electrotechnology/High Voltage, Automation and Control, Applied Engineering Sciences and workshop courses. The ideal candidate will be able to bring industry experience into the classroom, develop course and program curriculum, deal with relevant operational and educational issues, and cultivate positive relationships with students. BCIT is one of Canada’s largest post-secondary institutes, with more than 45,000 students enrolled in certificate, diploma, apprenticeship and degree programs. The Marine Campus, conveniently located in North Vancouver, is a premier provider of marine training in Canada. Many instructors are marine engineers with worldwide and local experience, utilizing their extensive skills to deliver a wide variety of marine engineering courses.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Classroom instruction to cadets, entry-level, upgrader, PTS or Industry Services students; Workshop and laboratory instruction and supervision; Instructional counseling, evaluation and preparation; Administrative responsibilities, including assignments, examination marking, and student evaluation; Curriculum development, maintenance and program enhancement; Administrative processes required to ensure appropriate resources are in place to deliver training; Other duties directly related to instruct/facilitate of trades and vocational programs; Input into development of modifications to workshop and instructional areas. Preparing and presenting online teaching, classroom lectures, classroom management; practical demonstrations, and working collectively/collaboratively with the Marine Engineering Department Head and faculty members. Maintaining a commitment to the campus’ quality management system per ISO 9001:2015. Student supervision on industry field trips. This position is not just about teaching marine engineering concepts; it also requires a person willing to: Motivate students to learn, Provide an inclusive, diverse and safe learning environment in the classroom, laboratory and workshop; Teach employability skills and assist with time management, and Provide mentorship, support for students who are struggling, and challenge the students who are excelling. A commitment to teaching excellence and preparation of outstanding graduates is foremost.
Valid First or Second-Class STCW Motor or Steam Combined Certificate of Competency or valid qualifications for Electrical engineering/automation & controls. Minimum five years seagoing engineer experience/shore-based position while in possession of a valid STCW First or Second-Class Motor or Steam Combined or Degree or Diploma in either Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Control & Automation Engineering with relevant experience. First-class Canadian Certificate of Competency Solid communication skills (excellent command of the English language, both written and oral). Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills. Demonstrated computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software. Prior teaching experience and mentoring trainees is an asset.
