Part-Time Academic (SPAN 1021.03: Beginning Spanish I, Section 11) - Fall 2026 (Online-Synchronous) Posting Number PTAP3508P Department/Unit Spanish & Latin American Studies Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities A part-time academic is required to teach Spanish 1021.03: Beginning Spanish I (Section 11) Fall Term 2026 (September 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026) Currently Scheduled: MW 16:05 – 17:25 (Online Synchronous) Course Description: This introductory course is designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of Spanish. It focuses on developing basic communication skills through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will learn essential grammar and vocabulary while engaging in everyday topics such as greetings, personal information, daily routines, and preferences. By the end of the course, students will be able to carry out simple conversations, understand short written and oral texts, and write brief paragraphs about familiar topics. In order to fulfill the Bachelor of Arts Language Requirement in Spanish, students need to complete 6 hours of a single language within three semesters. The Part-Time Academic is responsible for planning and leading individual classes, administering tests, grading assignments, keeping records and the calculation of final grades. The Part-Time Academic is required to be available to students outside of class time. Qualifications/Requirements of Position Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English and hold a graduate degree in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, Applied Linguistics, Language Education, or a closely related field. Candidates should demonstrate strong teaching skills in university-level Spanish language instruction, including grammar instruction, commitment to student learning, and a strong sense of instructional responsibility. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver the course in an online format. Preference will therefore be given to candidates with demonstrated experience teaching and designing Spanish language courses in online environments, including the use of digital platforms and interactive approaches that support student engagement and effective language learning. Background or training in language pedagogy will be considered an asset. Salary Range/Pay Rate Per CUPE Collective Agreement
