Job Summary Under the direction of the Associate Dean, Community Studies, the incumbent performs duties associated with the academic and service operation of the Community Integration through Co-operative Education certificate program (C.I.C.E.). This is a two-year program for students with Intellectual Disabilities, developmental disabilities and/or other significant learning challenges. The main role of this position is to support the enhancement of academic and vocational skills of the participants through modified programming to meet their individual needs; all while ensuring they receive the opportunity to experience college life, pursue a post-secondary education, as well as develop skills which will help prepare them for employment and to function more independently in their communities. The incumbent provides adaptation and modifications to in-class activities, assignments, tests and examinations in Academic Experience courses, provides assistance in arranging support and resources for students, prepares and writes progress reviews and other documentation in co-operation with students and faculty. They will consult with faculty regarding changes or modifications to the curricula –as needed- and will assist faculty in implementing those changes. This is a collaborative approach, where the incumbent works very closely with individual student(s), faculty and staff. This position requires a clear Criminal Reference Check for Vulnerable Populations (Police Record Check). What you’ll be doing: Executes individual student’s learning and support needs in collaboration with each student, CICE faculty and Academic Experience faculty by: Observing students in learning situations. Implementing varied approaches to support student learning such as, but not limited to, scribing and adaptive tech, throughout the semester when providing in-class support. Interviewing students and/or family support workers, with consent, for information on learning styles, approaches, and strategies. Providing individualized support outside-class support to ensure student success in course work. Researching specific types of learning associated to disabilities and implementing techniques during class and outside of class support times. Monitoring student progress throughout the semester and adapting and/or recommending learning support strategies to faculty and team based on continuous assessment of student’s changing learning needs. Reviewing and supporting “at-risk” list created by faculty and assisting students in progressing through the course work. Meeting with students for individualized learning case management Assessing student needs on an ongoing basis, supporting students and adapting plans of action for mental health/crisis management/behaviour management. Collaborating in the development of, and co-implementing student success contracts. Contributing to weekly check in meetings with the team. Maintaining excellent working knowledge of learning management systems to provide support to students. Adapts, modifies, implements and evaluates individual learning outcomes for materials (lecture notes, readings, handouts, lab materials), assignments, tests and examinations, labs and field placement expectations according to individual student abilities by: Review course materials to ensure a high level of support for student expectation for academics in the classroom. Collaborating with academic experience faculty in addition with course information to ensure full integration of cice students. Presenting learning materials based on students learning styles to ensure student success. Coordinates student support systems that facilitate achievement of individual learning outcomes and participation in college activities by: Providing direct support in class and outside class during college activities and services. Demonstrating skills for students in class such as group work, individual academic achievements and social skill building. Implementing any program modifications or accommodations through accessible learning services for individualized the individualized learner. Networking with college services for interaction and learning support. Organizing time within computer labs and formal homework support tutorials. Assisting students with navigating and understanding their timetables and any alterations over the semester. Making recommendations for field placement opportunities and provide feedback on strategies that may support them in their field placement. Exchanging relevant information with student’s support circle with consent and assist students in understanding informed consent. Referring the student to appropriate support networks and inform the team and program coordinator. Providing a gateway access to supports by assisting students and navigating both the online and physical aspects of support services on campus. Facilitating dialogue and discussions between administration, faculty and students, families/caregivers (with consent) and external support networks. Assisting with and participating in semester start up and orientations including but not limited to registration, campus navigation for accessibility. Connecting students by facilitating with introductions navigating campus, participating in college groups, events and activities. Supporting with marketing and promotional events. Scaffolding social learning to ensure students are gaining independence to navigate campus and access college related services. Arranging, organizing, facilitating student participation in clubs. Composes required documentation for students and program by: Processing documentation as required, may include but not limited to, confidentiality, consent, communication with faculty and academic at-risk records. Corresponding with college staff, field placement specialist, associations and committees, etc. Recording meeting notes and informing team of any student concerns. Creating an agreement for student attendance, maintaining and updating files regarding academic experience courses. Other duties as assigned Including, but not limited to, taking photos of students (with consent) for yearbook and CICE page, manage social media posts, etc. What you’ll bring to the role: A minimum of two-year diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, Early Childhood Education, or related discipline, with emphasis in working with individuals who are developmentally challenged; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have at least two years of experience, ideally with adults who are developmentally challenged in an educational setting and/or focus through field placements, volunteer or paid work. Co-op and volunteer experience as part of the curricula may also be considered. Self-starter, comfortable with establishing own priorities. Non-violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training. Current First Aid and CPR Certificate. Must have knowledge of assistive technology and Learning Management Systems. Conflict resolution skills, behaviour management strategies and social and emotional development. Strong Interpersonal relationship skills, understanding the importance of promoting autonomy/independence. Experience working in an adult education. Experience working with complex mental health/dual diagnosis needs. Expertise working with a diverse population (physical disabilities, mild intellectual disability, ASD, FASD, learners who need modified curriculum etc.). Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
