  • Assist with planning and acquisition of life and social skills.
  • Monitor and reinforce behaviour for students with moderate to intense behaviour issues.
  • Support social-emotional learning, executive functioning, positive behaviour, and self-regulation.
  • Collect data and maintain accurate records for individual and group programs.
  • Prepare written reports (daily/weekly journals) and prepare classroom materials with teachers.
  • Provide input to IEP and student progress reports and perform record keeping including learning and behaviour data collection.
  • Provide general classroom support in inclusive settings.
  • Provide social guidance in non-structured environments.
  • Provide personal care assistance (toileting, feeding, diapering, dressing) and physical assistance (wheelchair maneuvering, positioning, lifting, transferring, motor skill development exercises).
  • Implement health care plans in collaboration with the school-based team (e.g., administering medication, monitoring seizure activity, diabetes management, and other complex medical needs).
  • Implement educational support programs (e.g., speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy) and assist students using specialized equipment.
  • Assist with administering minor first aid (e.g., applying bandages, dispensing ice packs).
  • Ensure safe and orderly storage of special equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in staff meetings as requested

Requirements summary

  • Grade 12 diploma (or equivalent).
  • Education assistant certificate (equivalent to one-year post-secondary) or related equivalent qualifications.

Job description

  • <div><strong>Kootenay Lake School District is looking for qualified candidates to work on an as-needed basis as Casual/On-Call Education Assistants for the 2026-2027 School Year. Qualified candidates will be considered for placement on the established casual list. All awarded applicants will be required to join the CUPE Local 748 Union and have a Criminal Record Check (submitted by the employer).</strong></div> <p>*This posting is for <strong>external</strong> applicants only. If you are a current CUPE employee for SD8 - please apply to the 2026-2027 CUPE Call-Out Registration. Job applications will be reviewed monthly or on an as-needed basis depending on school staffing needs. </p><p><b><u>Position Description:</u></b></p><p>Education Assistants work under the general direction of a teacher in the school, and under the supervision of the principal/vice-principal or designate. Education Assistants build meaningful connections with students, fostering open communication and emotional well-being. Education Assistants working along with the school-based team to provide assistance in educational settings with behavioural intervention, academic progress and family dynamics for students with diverse needs. As part of the student support team, the Education Assistants promotes and maintains a safe, caring and inclusive school environment. They work primarily in an inclusive classroom/school setting, under the direction of the classroom teacher, to aid and support the students with diverse needs so they may accomplish their IEP (individual education plan) objectives.
