The BC Centre for Ability provides community-based services to enhance the quality of life for children, youth and adults with disabilities, and their families, in ways that foster inclusion in all aspects of life. Position Summary

We are looking for a Speech Language Pathologist for the Provincial Outreach Therapy Program to join our Therapy Services Team. Therapy Services at the BC Centre for Ability includes the Provincial Outreach Therapy Program, the Early Intervention Therapy Program, the North Shore School Occupational Therapy Program, the Community Brain Injury Program, and SET-BC.

The Speech Language Pathologist will be working as part of a team to deliver specialized training and clinical consultation to communities around the province that are rural, remote, or underserved. This position will be working with an internal team that may include a Coordinator, an Occupational Therapist, a Physiotherapist, and a Behavioral Consultant. The internal team will provide both in-person and virtual support to communities around the province that may include direct service, mentorship or support to the existing team in the communities.

This position involves and requires collaborative innovation and learning, to build and maintain purposeful connections and relationships with community leaders, families, and local agencies across British Columbia. The employee will demonstrate knowledge in the specialized area of providing outreach support and should understand the unique context of working in remote and rural regions of the province to meaningfully support children and families of Indigenous ancestry.

Responsibilities

  • Provide education and implement therapeutic programs using a coaching approach
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to support children and families in their communities
  • Travel to communities throughout the province, frequency based on the needs of the community
  • Use Evidence Based Practice and Family Centered Practice to guide clinical reasoning
  • Practice using a Trauma Informed approach
  • Assess and provide support in the areas of language understanding and use, social communication, speech clarity, alternative or augmentative communication, fluency, pre-literacy skills and oral motor skills involved in eating and drinking
  • Prescribe and obtain equipment to optimize participation
  • Provide mentorship and education to clinicians around the province
  • Participate in staff meetings, case reviews, medical liaison meetings, and in-services.
  • Maintain up to date records that meet agency and regulatory body requirements

  • Undertake additional responsibilities as directed

Qualifications

  • Education, Training and Experience
  • Master's degree or equivalent in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Previous experience working in pediatrics is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Practices in accordance with the International Classification of Function and F-words of childhood development with a commitment to inclusive practice and family centered care
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn from the host community and practice cultural humility
  • Strong collaborator who develops effective working relationships with others
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to adapt to change and embrace new technology
  • Competency using a virtual platform, electronic client record system and word processing software
  • Working conditions & provisos
  • Must be registered with CHCPBC (includes Criminal Record Check)
  • Valid BC driver’s license with reliable use of a car for work with business insurance
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to travel locally and within BC for up to a week at a time
  • In general, the team is expected to travel 1 week per month.
  • Works hours are generally 8:30am-4:30pm
  • When not on outreach, 3 days working from the office is expected
