TITLE: Direct Support Professional

Position status: Full-time (Union)

Schedule: 40 hours a week- Saturday 10 am to 10 pm, Sunday 10 am to 10 pm, Tuesday 3 to 11 pm and Friday 7 am to 3 pm

Reporting to the Program Manager, and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, this position is responsible for the day-to-day support of group and individual skill building activities. The Community Participation Support /Day program provides onsite, community or virtual based support to individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (whose primary language is in ASL). The individual participants require a communication rich setting, and may display complex behavioural, mental health and developmental needs.

  • Primary duties
  • Lesson planning to meet goals of client skill building activities, facilitate group and 1-1 activities, track attendance, write progress notes and other related documentation related to program and funder requirements
  • Participate in Plan of Care meetings, service reviews, program planning, evaluation, supervision and team meetings
  • Ensure that activities and daily QAM requirements are in accordance with agency mission, vision, values, strategic direction and policies to ensure the highest quality of care
  • Ensure supportive, safe and predictable environment through following schedule, routine and communication with team
  • Implement daily programming activities consistent with Plan of Care goals, track and report on progress
  • Support with areas including personal hygiene, meal preparation, meal supervision and support,
  • First aid/CPR and Safe Management behavioural descalation techniques as required
  • Administer medications consistent with Organization’s policies & procedures
  • Promote an evidence-based, person-centred approach to care
  • Communication in American Sign Language and respect to Deaf Culture
  • Advocate on behalf of individuals and their specific needs/goals, follow up any concerns with managment
  • Work collaboratively with team and individual’s service team; dedicating one’s self to excellent service
  • Physical activities including, but not limited to, lifting, bending and prolonged standing

Qualifications

  • DSW Diploma or related college degree or equivalent work acquired experience.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in a day program/residential setting with Individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health needs and/or dual diagnosis
  • Knowledge and experience working within the Deaf community and proficiency in ASL. Experience with appropriate advocacy skills of marginalized groups or Deaf community
  • Previous ABA training and aging population or experience is an asset
  • Professionalism and experience working with team members and liaising with families, community service partners, stakeholders
  • Demonstrated team work, leadership, creative problem solving abilities with critical thinking skills, is able to adhere to policies and protocols
  • Experience supporting nutritional needs and life skills development for Individuals in service
  • Familiarity of Developmental Services Ontario and developmental services sector, Quality Assurance Measures
  • Excellent communication, literacy, interpersonal skills, and experience in computer literacy (e.g. Words, Excel, Outlook), video conference call (Zoom, MS Teams), online Learning Management Systems (e-learning)
  • Knowledge and experience with report writing and data entry
  • Current Quality Assurance Measures, Safe Management, Medication Administration, and WHMIS certification and be able to actively participate in all trainings
  • Physical capacity and ability to work 1:1 with Individuals with developmental disability
  • Valid Ontario Full G Driver’s License and clean driving record (is an asset)
  • French language/LSQ (is an asset)
