Position Summary
- The Child Life Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating all child play programs and related activities throughout paediatrics, oncology, complex care, chronic illness, palliative, surgery, emergency, family care center or other areas as required across the two sites, including:
- Delivering direct patient care by providing therapeutic play opportunities and programming designed to reduce stress and help children and families cope with hospitalization
- Training, orientation and supervision of volunteers and students
- Coordination of special visitor's events, including holiday planning
- Collaborating with the Foundation with respect to gifts and fundraising
- Monitoring of a small budget for equipment and supplies related to child life activities
- Ensuring that all toys and equipment meet safety standards
- Working in all children's areas as needed and running pre-op preparation classes
- Influencing child and family centered care throughout the organization
Key Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in child life studies
- Minimum 2 - 3 years previous related clinical experience is preferred
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent development, family dynamics, play and activities, developmental observation and assessment, behaviour management and all appropriate interventions is essential
- Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team approach as well as the ability to work well independently and with minimal supervision
- Ability to think critically and effectively in order to prioritize needs in critical situations
- Highly effective decision making, problem solving and organizational skills combined with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written; a second language is a definite asset
- Reliable and flexible individual to work as part of a diverse professional work team
- Positive attendance and work record essential
