Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The role will provide intentional, directed, spiritual care for residents, tenants, patients and clients of St. John's Housing & Community Services, including the Glenbrook Lodge, Hospital and Downtown Social Ministries Chaplaincy. ACCOUNTABILITIES: The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties: Chaplaincy On-call for emergency weekend calls to provide pastoral support to individuals who identify as Salvation Army when admitted to the Glenbrook Lodge, area hospitals or St. John's Housing & Community Services. May also be on-call/casual for occasional weekday support when full-time chaplain is absent from role. Must carry pager/cell phone for designated hours. Prays with and or leads people to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits. Provides one-on-one spiritual counsel and care. Ensures information is provided regarding additional available spiritual and religious care. Duties would include visitation, offering of prayer, scripture reading, pastoral support to individual and family members/emergency contacts, and occasionally leading chapel services. May be required to provide pastoral care to those who have a differing faith tradition. Must maintain written records and statistics as required. Must be willing to be trained under both The Salvation Army and Newfoundland & Labrador Health Services protocols and policies. Performs other duties as assigned. Admin/ Community Support Responds to spiritual care inquiries within the framework of The Salvation Army and Newfoundland & Labrador Health Services Policies & Procedures. Responds and assists residents, patients, tenants and clients at times of physical/mental/emotional crises. Performs other work-related duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: May encounter individuals who exhibit abusive/aggressive behaviour. May encounter emotionally distraught individuals. Some travel between locations may be required. Will involve physical activities including prolonged walking and standing Must be willing to be vaccinated according to Newfoundland & Labrador Health Services Standards. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army/Newfoundland & Labrador Health Services health and safety policies and procedures. Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered 1. Education and Certification: Completion of a formal post-secondary program of two academic years – chaplaincy, divinity, theology, pastoral counselling, spiritual care or related field is preferred . Specialized training with a recognized chaplaincy or spiritual care education body (i.e., Spiritual & Religious Care Certificate from Booth University College or equivalent and/or 2 Units of Clinical Pastoral Education (i.e., CASC) and/or combination of education & experience may be considered. Current Certification in First Aid/CPR and WHMIS. Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, or willingness to be trained. Alternative combination of education and experience might be considered. 2. Experience and Knowledge: Minimum 1 years of experience in spiritual/religious care and/or equivalent experience. Experience working with marginalized people, including people recovering from addictions and/or experiencing mental health issues. Experience working with seniors and individuals in a health care setting considered an asset. 3.Competencies and Attributes: An understanding of Salvation Army Social Mission programs. Adhere to all Salvation Army/Newfoundland & Labrador Health Services policies, directives, and operating guidelines. Ability to work within The Salvation Army/Newfoundland & Labrador Health Services organizational structure. Ability to provide clear criminal record/vulnerable sector check. A primary commitment to Jesus Christ and a passion to minister to persons of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Knowledge of professional requirements for chaplaincy/spiritual care. Demonstrate a high level of integrity, good judgment, and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality. Demonstrates compassion and respect for clients/ family. Attentive listening skills and ability to feel empathy. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization. Familiarity with ethical guidelines related to spiritual care, confidentiality and boundaries in a healthcare setting Ability to de-escalate individuals in stressful situations. Fluent spoken and written English. Quality oral and written communication skills. 4. Membership in Committees: Member of the chaplaincy team for St. John’s Housing & Community Services Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $25.25 to $31.56 with a maximum of $37.88. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
