Job Description

Position Purpose summary: The Day Camp Counsellor - Recreation will assist the Day Camp Coordinator in all areas of operating the day camp program. They will encourage, support, respect, and demonstrate a positive, caring, energetic, attitude towards all who attend the day camps and other staff members while the children are participating in a variety of activities, making new friends, and learning about the Christian faith.

Accountabilities

  • Create and implement a 5-week day camp program for children aged 6-11, with an administrative team. Works with the Day Camp Coordinator and other camp staff in planning and implementing camp. Responsible for the day camp logistics and lead various camp activities including (but not limited to) music, sports, recreational games, crafts, and other scheduled events. Responsible for ensuring effective training, support, and supervision of camp volunteers. Oversee engagement of volunteers and their activities. Clearly communicate directions for program activities. Document processes and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems. Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and well-developed children and youth. Chaperone children on field trips and stay with assigned groups during field trips as required. Attend all staff training/orientation and meetings Role models appropriate behaviors and attitudes. Ensure that Day Camp area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc. Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup. Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff. Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually. Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information. Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures. Written and Verbal Communication Document processes, report as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems. Create and maintain a list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes. Support external reporting requests as needed. Perform other related duties as required.

  • CONDITIONS: This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week. Working environment is in a day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable conditions with the following exceptions, exposure to tantrums and noise. Ability to lift/move up to 29 lbs. This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time. Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Normal hours of work: The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements.

  • Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour paid meal break.

Conditions of Employment

This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria: aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; a valid Social Insurance Number; be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations. International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents. Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements apply. Individuals who required employer-specific work authorization (e.g., international students on study permits) are not eligible under this program. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria. The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision, and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Completed a minimum of grade nine (9). Completion of secondary school is preferred. Current, valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification or willingness to obtain would be an asset. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements: Up to 1 year of experience working directly with children in a day camp setting Must have excellent written, verbal and computer skills (this includes but not limited to video editing) Skills and Capabilities: Attention to detail, problem-solving and analytical skills. Self-motivated and disciplined. Organized, hardworking, dedicated, creative, and possess leadership qualities. Able to work well independently and in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere. Strong leadership, planning and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to change. Ability to learn quickly and use initiative. Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution. Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and the ability to exercise good judgement. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently, and effectively. Able to help support other camp staff with children’s individual behavioral needs. A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision. Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation. Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $21.03 with a maximum of $25.23. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
