JOB OPPORTUNITY - Awake Overnight Child & Youth Counsellor, Live-In Treatment Program - Part-time Permanent

Position Summary

Youthdale Treatment Centres is a fully accredited Children’s Mental Health organization with a mission to provide children, adolescents and their care-givers access to the best available psychiatric care and support, restoring hope, and helping individuals reach their full potential.

Youthdale is looking to fill the position of a Part-Time Awake Overnight Child & Youth Counsellor to join the 592 Huron Live-In Treatment Program. The Awake Overnight Staff provides supervision to youth that reside in Live in treatment programs. Awake Overnight Staff must provide adequate coverage for the house during overnights and be fully responsible for ensuring the client’s emotional and physical safety and must stay on shift if the need arises.

Accountability Reports to the Live-in Treatment Manager

  • Corporate Responsibilities
  • Fosters positive interpersonal relationships with the staff, clients and visitors, outside agencies, government officials and related professional associations.
  • Maintains and adheres to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintains and adheres to all relevant legislation.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Works safely in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Agency Health and Safety Manual.
  • Demonstrates clinical practices, which are consistent with the mission, vision and philosophy of Youthdale Treatment Centres.
  • Job Responsibilities
  • Promotes a safe and therapeutic environment and establish therapeutic relationships with clients through role modeling consistent with the Agency Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Assesses and understands client mental health needs through a developmental and trauma informed lens and formulate methods of intervention.
  • Ensures that records are maintained as per agency standards and in accordance with privacy policies and legislation.
  • Effectively utilizes communication systems to convey client and program related information.
  • Reviews the overnight checklist with the front line staff at the beginning of each shift.
  • Completes Inspection Sheets every 15 minutes after each room inspection; room inspections involve opening the door and using a mini flashlight to confirm the client is physically in their bed.
  • Makes notes if the child is awake, restless or leaves their room for any reason, etc.
  • Awakes the asleep front line staff if a client wakes up and requires support for emotional, medical or physical distress or in case if a client is not in their room at the time of the room check and has not been seen leaving their room.
  • Sits at the end of the hall to complete their notes when they are not doing the room/property checks.
  • Answers the phone and take messages.
  • Completes a property walk through every hour in the event of the fire alarm system not being operational.
  • Debriefs client status to front line staff in the morning before their departure.
  • Participates actively in team meetings.
  • Participates in ongoing training and supervision sessions on a regular basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Child and Youth Work, Social Work or equivalent.
  • One-year relevant experience working with youth, preferably in a live-in program setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with at risk adolescents and young adults.
  • Appreciation of the importance of engaging youth and families from a strengths-based relationship-based approach.
  • Sensitivity and ability to work with a diverse client and staff group.
  • Ability to exercise professionalism and sound judgement in conflictual and stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR and SMG certification.
  • Completion of required suicide prevention and intervention training.
