Position Summary

The Life Skills Coach creates and facilitates cultural, educational and recreational opportunities for the youth residing at NOVA. In addition, the Life Skills Coach administers the SPDAT assessment to all youth residing in the STAY program.

Responsibilities

Administration

  • Maintain accurate and timely data collection, data entry and completion of any program assessments and surveys as directed
  • Completion of accurate written daily documentation (log book entries, contact notes, incident reports, medication book entries)
  • Completion of referral and intake documentation
  • Maintain a monthly budget and documentation of spending
  • Deliver services in a client-centered, strength-based approach consistent with unit philosophy
  • Adapt services to meet the needs of diverse populations as per unit policy
  • Build collaborative relationships with youth
  • Role model life skills, social skills, communication skills, and conflict resolution
  • Support youth to achieve goals as defined on their individual goal plans
  • Encourage youth to engage in healthy lifestyle alternatives
  • Address current challenges with youth in a transparent manner
  • Role model and assist the youth with self-advocacy
  • Identify, design and implement relevant educational groups
  • Plan and facilitate a monthly activity calendar
  • Transport youth in an agency vehicle and supervise group outings
  • Deliver services in accordance with unit and agency policies and procedures
  • Ensure youth are aware of and understand house rules and respond accordingly
  • Maintain a safe, secure environment
  • Communicate pertinent information to supervisor and other staff as necessary
  • Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation
  • Ensure maintenance and cleanliness of the unit and property
  • Liaise with guardians, program partners and other professionals
  • Maintain positive relationships with community members (neighbors, visitors etc.) and report significant challenges/incidents to the supervisor immediately
  • Supervise and mentor field placement students as directed
  • Contribute to a positive culture by assisting and supporting colleagues as needed and encourage and teach others about the unit’s operations
  • Practice agency mission, vision, values and guiding principles
  • Maintain positive, professional working relationships with colleagues
  • Participate in unit staff meetings
  • Participate in agency meetings and on agency committees as appropriate
  • Participate in core agency and additional ongoing training opportunities as directed and approved
  • Transport youth in personal vehicle as directed and approved
  • Other duties as directed by supervisor

Qualifications: / Skills:

Criteria

  • Diploma in a related human services field
  • 1 -2 years’ experience working with youth
  • Knowledge of addictions and a strength-based philosophy
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills
  • Able to work within a team environment and effectively deal with crisis situations
  • Able to work shift work
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and Driver’s Abstract
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check
  • General computer knowledge (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)

Preferred Criteria

  • Degree in a related human services field
  • Certification in Suicide Intervention and Crisis Intervention Prevention
  • Experience working in residential programs
  • Experience with group dynamics and facilitation
  • Experience entering information into a database
  • Reliable vehicle, valid Class 5 Driver’s License, Driver’s Abstract, and $2 million liability insurance

Conditions of Employment

  • This position operates Monday through Friday - 40 hours per week. There is flexibility in the schedule dependent on youth recreation/life skills events.
  • The position requires frequent standing, walking up and down stairs, and occasional lifting.
  • The successful candidate will need a reliable vehicle and $2 million liability insurance.
  • In addition, this position is part of an on-call rotation approximately every 6 weeks.
  • The successful candidate will need a clear child intervention check, criminal record check, and a valid First Aid Certificate upon employment start date.
