Job Description

Primary Purpose The Registered Dietitian works both independently and with other Campus Wellness health professionals to provide individual counselling to students to promote healthy meal planning, disease prevention, and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. The Registered Dietitian assesses client nutrition, nutritional conditions and the treatment and prevention of nutrition related disorders by nutritional means. The dietitian maintains a high ratio of clients with mental health diagnoses and co-morbidities and is an integral part of the clinical and mental health circle of care. The dietitian is accountable to their student clients and is responsible for ensuring that their practice meets legislative requirements and Standards of Practice of the College of Dietitians of Ontario. Key Accountabilities Individual Counselling · Provide individual nutrition counselling for University of Waterloo students, including nutritional assessments, development of client-focused nutritional plans, health education, lifestyle counselling and referrals. · Apply evidence-informed strategies and theories of behaviour change to enhance and facilitate student awareness, attitudes, knowledge, motivation, and behaviour change. relating to nutrition and other overlapping lifestyle issues such as sleep and physical activity. · Identify mental health issues and provide referrals to, support for and collaboration with medical and mental health teams. · Develop and maintain a liaison with key University partners (Food Services, Athletics, WUSA, Campus Housing, the Affiliated and Federated Institutions of Waterloo) and with community agencies such as Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo-Wellington and Region of Waterloo Public Health. · Adhere to all guidelines and regulations regarding the collection, use, retention, and destruction of personal health information (ex. FIPPA, PHIPA, UWaterloo Policies and procedures); Internal Nutrition Resource · Monitor and update nutrition knowledge of Campus Wellness medical and counselling staff; identify ongoing learning needs and provide continuing education and expert technical assistance as needed. · Collaborate with Communications Project Manager to provide and/or review healthy eating content for communication material and website/social media posts. · Mentor and develop dietetic interns on Community Nutrition placements as schedule allows. Other duties as assigned · When delegated by the Medical Director, assist with ongoing and one-time projects or initiatives both within Campus Wellness and across the University. This may include participation on university-wide committees and groups of stakeholders who are working towards a common vision fo student health and wellness (e.g., food security strategy). · Support Health Promotion team members for campus wide health and prevention initiatives · Contribute to Campus Wellness initiatives and committees. Required Qualifications Education · Completion of an accredited 4-year or equivalent undergraduate degree with appropriate courses in sciences and human nutrition, administration, and humanities. · Completion of an accredited dietetic internship or equivalent supervised practical training. · Successful completion of the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination. · Registered and in good standing with the College of Dieticians of Ontario and meets College requirements for quality assurance and continuing competency. · Completion of an accredited food allergen training program. · A clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required Experience · Three to five years of relevant experience in individual clinical nutrition counselling and group teaching. · Experience working with young adults and adults with psychological and psychiatric diagnoses, including eating disorders. · Experience working with culturally diverse populations. · Experience with an Electronic Health Records system is essential (preference for Accuro). Knowledge/Skills/Abilities · Demonstrates a commitment to best practice and client-focused care. · Ability to review and appropriately interpret medical history, diagnosis, medications, and laboratory data relating to nutrition. · Demonstrates an understanding of the impact of social determinants of health on an individual’s educational needs and ability to maintain dietary recommendations. · Maintains a high level of professional competence through continuing education and critical evaluation of professional practice that enables implementation of best practices. · Able to work with a high degree of autonomy, as well as collaboratively with other Campus Wellness team members. · Demonstrates excellent computer proficiency and interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. · A good understanding of and appreciation for the complex and unique needs of the campus community.
