Job description

  • <ul><li><strong><u>INDIGENOUS YOUTH WORKER</u></strong></li></ul><p><strong><u>(Temporary, Permanent & Casual)</u></strong></p> <p>Coquitlam School District invites applications from individuals for the position of Youth Worker – Indigenous Education for both permanent and casual positions.
  • As the third largest school district in the province, we are located within a 40-minute drive from downtown Vancouver.
  • The school district has a population of 34,000 students with approximately 4,400 teaching, administrative, managerial and support staff.</p> <p>Working under the direction of administrator/designate, the youth worker implements and promotes individualized and/or group programs in First Nations studies under the direction of the teacher. </p> <p><strong><u>Required knowledge and Skills:</u></strong></p> <ul><li>Completion of a two-year post-secondary education diploma in child/youth care from a recognized college/institution OR completion of two years of university course work in Psychology or Sociology.</li><li>Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License</li><li>A thorough knowledge of First Nations cultures, traditions and values demonstrated through <strong>Indigenous Ancestry.</strong></li></ul> <p>The successful applicant will be a person of Indigenous ancestry in accordance with an approved special program under Section 42(3) of the British Columbia Human Rights Code.</p><p><b>As per Human Rights Code Exemptions:</b></p><p> Experiences and employment history that relates to the role should an applicant not have a post-secondary education or diploma due to the barriers created by colonization.</p><p> The following will be accepted as equivalent to a two-year diploma in child/youth care for applicants applying to Indigenous Youth Worker positions.</p><ul><li> Self-identification of Indigenous ancestry (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit). </li><li>2+ years experience working with children and youth (preferably Indigenous children and youth).</li><li> Experience working with Indigenous communities on a reserve and/or within an urban setting, with a focus on working with children and youth (preferably Indigenous children and youth).</li><li> Experience recognizing and providing culturally sensitive services in an educational setting to children and youth.</li></ul> <p>Both continuing and casual positions are unionized and offer $34.28/hour.
  • Continuing positions are 37.5 hours / week while school is in session and include an attractive benefit package which consists of Extended Health, Dental, and Pension Plan (MPP).
  • Casual positions offer 16% in lieu of benefits.</p> <p>Applications will be reviewed as they are received.
