Our staff enjoy guiding and assisting incoming undergraduate students. We aim to give first year students the tools needed to make informed decisions during this transition period, and plan their remaining years at the University with confidence. Your opportunity:The First Year Advisor – International Student Success, will be responsible for ensuring students receive accurate, timely and responsive advising and support on the unique experiences of international first-year engineering students.Working closely and collaboratively with the First Year Advisor, Intercultural Learning and Experience, the First Year Advisor, International Student Success will contribute to the improvement, monitoring and promotion student success initiatives within the first-year engineering class. This involves the coordination of pre-first year summer programming, academic advising, and retention programming. The incumbent will also be responsible for presentations and seminar facilitation on life and academic skills, training student leaders to support first year seminar courses and academic skills initiatives.Your responsibilities will include:

Advising students on academic and/or financial matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary Providing detailed information on program and/or course eligibility requirements, procedures, policies and deadlines Leading seminars and/or workshops Analyzing service delivery and/or internal processes and recommending improvements Keeping well-informed on changes to policies, procedures, collective agreements, and applicable legislated requirements Making informed referrals and supporting an individual in distress until referral contact is made

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience Minimum four (4) years experience in student advising and/or student services within a post secondary environment Minimum three (3) years experience developing and delivering student programming and group facilitation in a post secondary setting Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the interpretation and application of academic policy and procedure, preferably at the University of Toronto Demonstrated experience developing and implementing educational programs and initiatives designed to support student success in higher education Demonstrated experience with supporting students in distress and knowledge of risk management procedures Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to students in a responsive, empathetic, thoughtful, and discreet manner Expertise with intercultural diversity, equity, and international learning opportunities Ability to work effectively with highly diverse and demanding communities of students Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and work environment Well developed verbal and written communication skills with exceptional presentation and group facilitation skills Demonstrated good judgement and ability to interact with others with tact, courtesy and patience Demonstrated understanding of a student-centered approach with sensitivity to principles of equity and inclusivity Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to make quick, sound judgments under pressure Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) Excellent time management and organizational skills Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
