Position Summary

  • Indigenous Language Fluency (ILF 129 – Internship, Nuu-chah-nulth) consists of one semester of full or part-time, paid or unpaid employment in a position related to Nuu-chah-nulth immersion and the provision of holistic, culturally infused environments. Students will have the opportunity to apply theories and methods of language revitalization learned in the program to address challenges encountered in the workplace and explore the barriers and issues related to maintaining immersion. Students will learn new skills to enhance their future employment success and/or prepare them for further academic study related to expanding the field of language revitalization and provision of holistic fluency-building environments. ILF 129 will run in partnership with Ahousaht First Nation from Monday, August 31, 2026 to Friday, April 16, 2027: Students to complete 180 hours with no regularly scheduled class time needed. Scheduled classes occur on Monday, September 14, 2026, and Monday, April 5, 2027 from 6 PM to 9 PM. The internship will provide students with the opportunity to consolidate and integrate their studies during their workplace experience. They will record their observations and reflections in preparation for presenting an analysis of their experiences in relation to providing holistic language immersion learning opportunities. Their reflections will include an applied research approach that supports Indigenous language learning programs that reflect community needs and the United Nations Declaration of Rights for Indigenous People. The students will receive employer, fluent speaker, and instructor feedback; develop new employability skills; and create new visions for future employability or study in the field of Indigenous language revitalization. The teaching faculty of North Island College are responsible for implementing the College’s vision, goals, and objectives as they relate to teaching and learning. To carry out their teaching assignments, faculty use organizational skills, inter-personal skills, and their knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, and curricular design. In addition, they have a responsibility to serve as role models for students and colleagues. The responsibilities and typical duties listed below constitute a generic job description for teaching faculty whose responsibility may be for the delivery of scheduled classes, the support of self-paced, on-line, and distance courses, and/or instruction and supervision in laboratories, practicums, shops, etc. Position Competencies

Experience teaching and mentoring in the specified language (Nuu-chah-nulth).

Proficiency in the specified language and ability to work with fluent speakers to facilitate learning.

Background/knowledge in student assessment tools and placement testing.

BC Teaching Certificate or Provincial Instructors Diploma is desirable.

Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis on second language acquisition methods is desirable (e.g., Dr.

Greymorning Method, Total Physical Response, comprehensible input methods).

Master’s Degree in Indigenous Education/Indigenous Language is desirable.

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in an inter-cultural learning environment.

Proven instructional abilities using creative and motivating approaches.

Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Proficiency with computer applications and word processing.

Preference for qualified instructors with Indigenous ancestry.

Ability to support reflective portfolios and holistic, culturally safe learning environments
