Quick overview

  • Collaborate with colleagues on School Improvement Plans and the District's Framework for Enhancing Student Learning.
  • Work with classroom teachers and school-based teams, including co-teaching and classroom support in addition to individual/group counselling.
  • Support critical incident response and liaise with outside agencies

Requirements summary

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for).
  • Master’s level qualifications in counselling/psychology (required).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach identified subjects at the middle years level.
  • Experience with universal design and differentiation.
  • Experience/training/knowledge of Social Emotional Learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to create a positive classroom community and contribute to a safe, caring, healthy school environment.
  • Strong belief in inclusion and the potential of all students to learn.
  • Understanding of the BC Curriculum and ability to plan short-term and long-term.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with staff to enhance student learning.
  • Demonstrated use of proactive classroom management and dignity-preserving assessment practices.
  • Essential understanding of RTI (Response to Intervention) framework for counselling support and behaviour interventions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Preference for advanced training in educational psychology and additional counselling/behaviour assessment and protocol experience (e.g., Functional Analysis of Behaviour, behaviour intervention plans, district protocols, Wraparound/TRIBES/Restorative Justice/Circle Talks, CASEL, critical incident response, and outside agency liaison)

Job description

  • <p><strong> </strong></p> <p><strong>Position Description</strong></p> <p>A temporary full time (1.0) Counselor is required by School District No.
  • 60 (Peace River North) effective September 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
  • The assignment will be at Dr.
  • Kearney Middle School.</p> <p>Dr.
  • Kearney Middle School is a vibrant middle school offering classes in grades 7-9.
  • We enroll a diverse student population of 600, 25% of whom are of Indigenous descent.
  • We have an active Parent Advisory Committee and a supportive parent community.
  • Our school is committed to student-centered learning, a focus on collaborative planning, and a caring environment to provide quality education.

  • Demonstrated ability to create a positive classroom community contributing to a safe, caring, and healthy school where every student feels a sense of belonging</li> <li>Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all students to learn</li> <li>Understanding of the BC Curriculum and ability to plan both short-term and long-term in consideration of class composition</li> <li>Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the foundation of enhancing student learning</li> <li>Demonstrated use of classroom management practices that are pro-active and maintain student dignity</li> <li>Demonstrated use of assessment practices that promote student learning and maintain student dignity</li> <li>Qualifications at the Master’s level in counselling/psychology are required</li><li>Counselling support and behaviour interventions that follow the RTI (Response to Intervention) framework is an essential understanding</li><li>Excellent interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills are required to work at all three tiers of a responsive system, supporting teachers, school teams and parents in developing and strengthening the social and emotional skills of our children & youth</li><li>Preference will be given to the candidate who has the above skill set, plus:</li><li>Advanced training in educational psychology</li><li>Qualifications and experience in counselling at all grade levels</li><li>Experience and ability to utilize, interpret and implement the Functional Analysis of Behaviour, Auchenbach and other approved behaviour assessments to support the development of Behaviour Intervention Plans</li><li>Knowledge and skills to develop and support district protocols such as: Safety Plans, Crisis, Prevention & Intervention plans, Emergency plans, Risk Assessments, Threat Assessment</li><li>Experience and knowledge of processes such as Wraparound, TRIBES, Restorative Justice, Circle Talks, Social Responsibility Performance Standards</li><li>Experience with co-teaching and supporting in the classroom in addition to individual/group counselling</li><li>Knowledge and understanding of the CASEL framework , both in the classroom and on a school wide basis</li><li>A commitment to working with colleagues on the development of School Improvement Plans and the District's Framework for Enhancing Student Learning</li><li>Ability to work collaboratively with classroom teachers and school based teams to support classrooms with Tier 1 and 2 supports and specific scenarios involving more individual plans</li><li>Skills to develop and implement individual/group programs in areas such as social skills, self-esteem, anger management, bullying, anxiety, peer-pressure</li><li>Knowledge/experience in working with critical incidence response</li><li>Knowledge of materials and strategies appropriate for supporting students with complex needs</li><li>Ability/experience to contact and liaison with outside agencies</li> </ul> <p><strong>Interested applicants are required to supply</strong></p> <ul> <li>Three (3) references</li> <li>Verification of qualifications (BC Teacher Certificate) </li> </ul> <p> </p> <p> <strong>Compensation</strong></p> <ul> <li>$2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas</li> <li>$3,500 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)</li> <li>Salary as per collective agreement.
