Deliver a comprehensive Physical and Health Education program for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students within a collaborative environment. Lead outdoor and experiential education activities and coordinate the Outdoor School for upper elementary grades.
Candidates must hold or be eligible for an Alberta teaching certificate and demonstrate expertise in physical literacy and health education. Experience with the IB Primary Years Programme and independent school settings is considered an asset.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, STS offers all three IB Programmes from Kindergarten through to Grade 12.

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) is seeking a Physical and Health Education (PHE) teacher who is excited about teaching in the Elementary school. This is a 1.0 FTE probationary position for the 2026-27 school year and may become continuous following a successful one-year probationary period.
This position will teach PHE to Kindergarten to Grade 6 students at STS in a collaborative, co-teaching environment. This includes having a strong understanding of physical literacy and meaningful physical education; fostering positive relationships with students; creating engaging and appropriate lesson plans and activities, maintaining a safe and inclusive classroom environment both indoors and outdoors; utilizing appropriate instructional techniques and strategies, and conducting meaningful assessments to provide feedback that improves student learning and achievement.
The successful candidate must have an Alberta teaching certificate or be eligible to obtain one. Ideally, they also have experience in PHE in elementary school.
Though not necessarily prerequisites for this role, knowledge of, and/or training in, the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and experience working in an independent school setting are considered assets. In order to support student learning in a technology-rich environment, candidates should have experience using technology in the classroom.
All faculty are expected to contribute to STS’s robust offering of co-curricular activities and demonstrate commitment to students’ growth outside of the classroom. Teachers new to STS participate in a dynamic and supportive mentorship program.
Core Areas of Responsibility
· Teach to the Alberta Program of Studies, specifically Physical Education and Health.
· Demonstrate the competencies outlined in Alberta Education’s Teaching Quality Standard (TQS).
· Abide by policies laid out in the Education Act (2023).
· Ensure the safety and well-being of our students in accordance with STS procedures and policies.
· Understand and implement the Mission and Vision of the School.
· Collaborate with school administration, the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator, other teachers in the department, and other faculty at STS.
· Model the Learner Profile of the International Baccalaureate (IB).
· Deliver a Health and Physical Education program based on current research for best practice.
· Create a supportive learning environment for students that encourages a positive attitude toward physical education, a sense of curiosity and inquiry, and offers opportunities to develop the qualities of the Learner Profile.
· Collaborate with grade level teachers to implement transdisciplinary learning opportunities;
· Utilize a variety of effective teaching, classroom management and assessment practices in support of student achievement.
· Conduct formative and summative assessment of students, provide detailed, effective, and immediate feedback to support student learning as well as evaluate achievement and report results to students and parents.
· Use data-informed strategies to understand students’ learning abilities and apply teaching interventions to support learning.
· Maintain effective, proactive, and ongoing communication with parents, colleagues and students.
· Participate in the co-curricular program and special events.
· Assist in the coordination and facilitation of Grades 4, 5, and 6 Outdoor School.
· Lead K-6 students in outdoor and experiential education pursuits (snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, etc.) on the school’s campus.
Qualifications: and Experience
· A comprehensive understanding of the IB PYP requirements is preferable.
· Demonstrated ability to reflect on one’s own professional practice.
· Commitment to cultivating trusting relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
· Model exemplary teaching in the subject area.
· Demonstrate knowledge of current educational research on best practices in Physical and Health Education.
· Well-developed and demonstrable executive functioning skills that engender confidence in decision-making.
· Self-motivated, detail-oriented and adaptable to changing priorities and procedures.
· Willingness to support school-sanctioned student information and learning management systems that promote whole school accountability, scope and sequence planning and record keeping.
· Demonstrated ability to work professionally and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
· Demonstrate and uphold a strong commitment to occupational health and safety.
· Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and reflection to refine teaching practice.
· Engage in ongoing professional development and IB training as required.
· Remain well-versed in emerging educational research about how students learn and factors that influence students’ learning and achievement.
· Ensure that instructional practices promote skill development and technology integration that reflect emerging post-secondary demands, equipping students for continued academic success.
