You are

An ASL Instructor. You will provide ASL instruction to the general public within the ASL Immersion program, to family members of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, and on occasion travel to various regions in the province to deliver ASL programming. The ASL Instructor provides learning opportunities both virtually and in-person.

The ASL Instructor may also provide educational programming, which is developed and guided by the Community Counsellor and the Language Program for newcomers who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The ASL Instructor assists consumers in learning American Sign Language, English, essential math related to daily life skills, and information about Canada so that Deaf Newcomers can live and work in the Canadian mainstream.

  • Your Role
  • Support the education and learning of the students in the classroom within the structure of an interdisciplinary team, and within a consultation and training model.
  • With support from the Community Counsellor and the Language Program for newcomers who are Deaf or hard of hearing, teach lesson plans related to the students’ individual goals.
  • Act as a Deaf role model (culture and language) to assist students in developing a positive and confident identity as a Deaf person.
  • Provide a learner-centered curriculum to the students.
  • Participate in ongoing assessment of student progress based on changing individual needs and educational goals.
  • Work with other staff, supervisor and funders in ongoing development and implementation of the program’s goals so that the program is tailored to meet individual student needs.
  • Provide activity, progress and attendance reports as required.
  • Participate and contribute to team meetings in regard to students, scheduling and program development.
  • What You Know
  • Individual must be culturally Deaf and be fluent in ASL
  • Individual must have formal or informal teaching experience
  • Certificate in Signing Naturally preferred
  • General understanding of language development
  • General understanding of providing learning opportunities both in-person and in a virtual setting (Zoom or Teams)
  • Organizational skills
  • Broad knowledge and experience in the Deaf community and mainstream
  • Ability to effectively solve problems as they arise in the classroom
