Job description

  • Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study.
  • The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
  • Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
  • Position Overview: Position involves primary and secondary research, analysis, writing and presentation, grant administration and overview, communication with other researchers, planning and undertaking meetings, working with staff and systems at the University of Winnipeg.
  • Candidates must live in or close to Winnipeg as the job involves in-person work in Winnipeg.

Duties

Conduct oral histories. Transcribe, index, and summarize oral histories for archival deposit. Prepare literature reviews. Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation. Perform data/word processing, routine computations, and record keeping. Perform routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities. Assist in preparing articles, publications, reports and presentations. Monitor project budget and make approved purchases on request. Assist in seeking publication opportunities for the research team. Maintain communications and outreach to research partners and sponsors. Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Masters Student or higher preferred Undergraduate Degree required in History, Indigenous Studies, or related field; Successful completion of at least two courses that focus on Indigenous Studies or Indigenous History or related field; Experience working independently on research projects; Previous oral history experience is preferred. Familiarity with digital audio recorders or willing to learn. Familiarity with Whisper Transcription or willing to learn. Familiarity with SharePoint or willing to learn. Ability to communicate and work well with the public. Confidence in organizing large events with guest speakers. Familiar with oral history techniques and technology, or willing to learn. Ability to read cursive handwriting. Condition(s) of Employment: Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. The period of work will be from June 5, 2026 - May 19, 2028 , and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-700 hours .
