About the role

The substitute teacher will deliver lessons and manage classrooms in the absence of regular teachers while integrating Mi'kmaw language and culture. They are responsible for fostering an inclusive, safe, and respectful learning environment that aligns with community values.

Position Summary

We are seeking dynamic, compassionate, and culturally grounded Substitute Teachers to support our students’ educational journey. The ideal candidates will deliver lessons in alignment with Mi’kmaw values and perspectives while fostering an inclusive, safe, and engaging classroom environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver lessons and manage classrooms in the absence of regular teachers.
  • Implement lesson plans provided by classroom teachers, adapting as needed to meet student needs.
  • Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Integrate Mi’kmaw language, culture, and knowledge into classroom activities.
  • Manage student behaviour in a manner consistent with Paqtnkek Education Centre’s values and policies.
  • Collaborate with school staff to support student learning and well-being.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent (preferred).
  • Nova Scotia Teacher Certification (or eligibility to obtain) is an asset.
  • Experience working in educational settings, preferably in Indigenous communities.
  • Knowledge of Mi’kmaw culture, language, history, and traditions.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to culturally responsive and trauma-informed teaching practices.

ASSETS

Proficiency in the Mi’kmaw language or a willingness to learn.

Experience with land-based learning and Indigenous pedagogy.

First Aid/CPR certification.

Conditions of Employment

A current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Child Abuse Registry Check.

Proof of qualifications and references upon request.
