About the role

The Recreation Program Instructor designs and leads engaging, developmentally appropriate activities for children aged 1.5 to 14 years. They are responsible for maintaining a safe, inclusive environment while collaborating with families and staff to ensure a positive program experience.

Recreation program instructor

The Recreation Program Facilitator is responsible for designing, organizing, and delivering a wide range of safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate recreational activities for children aged 1.5 to 14 years. This role involves leading activities that encourage physical fitness, creativity, creativity, social emotional learning and fun including sports, arts and crafts, fitness, group games, STEM and outdoor exploration.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children in recreational, educational, camp, sport, or childcare settings.
  • Certification in Standard/Intermediate First Aid & CPR Level C is preferred.
  • Post-secondary education, certification, or coursework in Recreation, Early Childhood Education, Physical Education, Physical Literacy, Child and Youth Care, Kinesiology, Education, or a related field is considered a strong asset.
  • Background Check: Trico Centre will initiate a comprehensive criminal background check for all new hires. A previous check will be accepted provided it is dated within the past 6 months
  • Related certifications such as NCCP, High Five PHCD or High Five Sport are considered an asset.

Experience/Skills Required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development principles and the ability to plan and deliver age-appropriate programs, activities, and learning experiences for children aged 18 months to 14 years.
  • Strong instructional skills with the ability to teach, demonstrate, and adapt age-appropriate recreational, sport, and physical literacy skills, drills, and progressions to meet varying developmental needs and abilities.
  • Excellent supervision, risk management, and safety awareness, with a commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all participants.

Competencies (Soft Skills)

  • Ability to build positive relationships with children and foster their engagement through enthusiastic leadership, creativity, and a child-centered approach.
  • Strong organizational, time management, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with children, families, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while demonstrating professionalism, sound judgment, and initiative.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • May be required to lift and moves items weighing 30 lbs. or greater.
  • Works shifts and may be required to be on call at specified times, and overtime may be required during staff shortages, shutdowns or when emergency situations arise.
  • Physically capable of actively participating in recreational and physical activities, assisting children as required, and performing the physical demands associated with the role, including standing, walking, lifting, bending, and demonstrating activities for extended periods.

Performance Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Program Planning and Delivery
  • Develop and implement daily and weekly activity plans tailored to different age groups and developmental stages (toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, youth).
  • Lead a variety of physical activities such as running games, obstacle courses, basic sports skills (soccer, basketball, floor hockey, badminton, volleyball) and fundamental movement.
  • Facilitate creative arts and craft projects that promote fine motor skills, imagination and self-expression including painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media.
  • Organize group games that promote cooperation, foster friendships and fair play including team-building exercises.
  • Adapt activities to accommodate children with diverse needs and abilities to ensure all participants are included and engaged.
  • Supervision and Safety
  • Maintain a safe, clean and organized activity environment
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with caregivers about program details, children’s progress and any concerns.
  • Collaborate with fellow staff members to support a cohesive program experience and share best practices

Status: Seasonal/Temporary

Schedule

Part-time daytime, evening and/or weekend hours that fall between 8am-8pm Monday- Sunday. Hours will remain flexible within the general Trico Centre scope of operations in keeping with the needs of the department. Seasonal and/or weekly schedules will be developed cooperatively with the Child & Youth Programs Coordinator/Director to accommodate program needs.

Wage

$18.00 -$23.00 per hour
