Job Title Non-Regular (Sessional) Faculty - MHIS 327 (Studies in Animation History) Fall 2026 Rank Tenure Information Job Summary Emily Carr University of Art + Design is currently seeking a qualified instructor to teach MHIS 327 – Studies in Animation History within the Faculty of Culture and Community in the Fall 2026 semester. We currently have two in-person sections to fill. Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers. This course offers students a deeper understanding of animation history. For many animation scholars and artists, a defining feature of “animation” that separates it from traditional photographic cinema is the capacity to bring to life processes or concepts that are invisible to the naked eye and to the live-action camera. This course uses that distinction as an organizing structure for thinking about the history and development of animation, by considering animation’s capacity to reveal otherwise-invisible historical factors and influences, including the rendering of history itself. Topics will cover industrial and material contexts of animation production; the intersection of animation with histories of fine arts and sciences; and the central role that animation has played in rendering and evoking abstract ideas or intangible experiences. Considering the wide range of animation traditions and the proliferation of animation across all digital media, the course eschews a comprehensive chronology in favour of a series of perspectives and case studies. Examples will include commercial animation from more than one global context, as well as independent artisanal animation, scientific and industrial animation, and animation in gallery installations. Through lectures, readings, and assignments, students will develop their own ability to understand and investigate areas of interest within animation. Required Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated erudition in animation studies, evidenced by PhD with dissertation focus on animation; or MA/MFA with 10+ years experience in animation criticism/programming/curation. EXPERIENCE Professional contributions to animation research or scholarship, evidenced by record of scholarly publication (monograph, edited collections, peer-reviewed journals) or substantial record of published criticism. 2+ years effective teaching experience relevant to animation studies at the university level (as demonstrated by syllabi and student/peer/supervisor evaluations). Experience teaching survey courses (as demonstrated by syllabi, teaching statement, and sample assignments). Experience teaching students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Demonstrated knowledge beyond European academic canon in education, professional practice, or teaching record.
