  • Support Take a Hike program activities including SEL implementation, family connection, community support connections, and assisting with IEP goal development.
  • Assist in leading expeditions and out-day excursions and participate in multi-day overnight camping trips, student volunteer program, and events

Requirements summary

Grade 12 education supplemented by successful completion of a degree with a child and youth care/counselling focus, or an equivalent combination of training and recent related experience. Experience working with youth in a formal setting for a period up to and including one month. Physically capable of performing the job duties.   • </p><p><strong>STUDENT SUPPORT WORKER (Take a Hike Program) </strong></p><p>Under the direction of the Administrative Officer or Delegate, works with teachers in support of students. <strong><u>DUTIES:</u></strong><strong> </strong></p><ul><li>Supervises students and delivers special programs to designated students and classes with a focus on student support as part of an interdisciplinary team. </li><li>Builds and maintains relationships and contact with students to promote attendance and success. </li><li>Provides crisis intervention, individual assistance and primary counseling to students with particular academic, emotional or social issues. </li><li>Advocates for students by providing community information and facilitating student referrals. </li><li>Implements, monitors and communicates on group or individual programs to school staff and parents, which may include home visits. </li><li>Provides career and course selection information. </li><li>Develops, implements and/or facilitates programs of life skills for health, parenting, independent living and employment. </li><li>Provides clerical services by maintaining records and ordering supplies as required. </li><li>Maintains working knowledge of current computer technology and demonstrates the use of educational computer resources to students. </li><li>Organizes and leads a life skills food and/or school meals program adhering to school meal guidelines as required. </li><li>Organizes and participates in field trips and other activities </li><li>Transports students in district or district-authorized vehicles as required. </li><li>Operates a personal computer for educational purposes. </li><li>May, on occasion, be required to perform other job-related duties as assigned. </li></ul> <strong><u>QUALIFICATIONS:</u></strong><strong> </strong><ul><li>Grade 12 education supplemented by successful completion of a degree with a child and youth care/counselling focus and or equivalent combination of training and recent related experience. </li><li>Experience working with youth in a formal setting for a period up to and including one month. </li><li>Physically capable of performing the job duties. </li></ul><strong>Take a Hike Program </strong><p>Take a Hike is an innovative program made possible by a partnership between the Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation and School District 79. The program is based at CVOLC (Cowichan Valley Open Learning Cooperative) and focuses on at-risk youth aged 15-19, grades 10-12. The adventure-based/experiential learning model of the program activities takes kids out of the classroom to help them achieve academic and personal success, as well as focusing on the mental health and well-being of the youth. The adventure-based activities will include canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, ropes courses, and kayaking on both day and multi-day trips. </p><p><strong>In</strong><strong> this role, you will:</strong> </p><ul><li>Support the implementation of Social Emotional Learning for students in the program </li><li>Assist with connecting with the family </li><li>Help students and families to connect to community supports </li><li>Implement and help in the delivery of SEL programs and education </li><li>Assist the teacher in the development and implementation of the student's IEP Goals, particularly around the student's social, emotional, behavioural and mental health needs </li><li>Collaborate with parents, guardians, teachers, and other professionals </li><li>Assist in leading all expeditions and out-day excursions </li><li>Participate in all aspects of the program including multi-day overnight camping trips, student volunteer program and events </li><li>Perform other duties within the job band</li></ul>This is a unionized position.
