The Health Care Aide Instructor is responsible for delivering engaging instruction and supporting student learning in the Health Care Aide (HCA) program at the Academy of Learning Career College in Edmonton. This role facilitates learning through theory instruction and hands-on lab delivery, supports student success through ongoing assessment and feedback, and ensures course delivery aligns with the approved Alberta Health Services curriculum standards. The Instructor contributes to a positive, supportive learning environment by monitoring student progress, providing guidance, and maintaining academic quality and consistency.

This is a casual position based on student enrollment with instruction delivered across flexible scheduling blocks including mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Part of the role is performed remotely, while lab instruction is conducted on campus in Red Deer, AB.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruction and student engagement
  • Deliver instruction in alignment with the approved HCA curriculum, program, and module outcomes in both in-class (theory and lab), online, and blended settings.
  • Participate in instructor-led orientation sessions for new students (online and/or by phone).
  • Facilitate engaging learning experiences that support student understanding and active participation.
  • Use technology and digital learning tools to enhance instruction and student engagement.
  • Respond to student inquiries via email or messaging platforms in a timely and professional manner (within 24 hours where possible).
  • Student support and progress monitoring
  • Monitor and assess student progress on an ongoing basis, both individually and in group settings.
  • Provide additional support and consultation to students who require extra assistance to meet learning outcomes.
  • Address attendance, academic performance, or behavioural concerns as they arise.
  • Maintain open communication with students regarding academic progress and expectations.
  • Assessment and evaluation
  • Prepare, administer, and grade assignments, exams, and practical evaluations.
  • Evaluate student performance and maintain accurate records of grades and progress.
  • Assign and post final grades in accordance with college policies and timelines.
  • Participate in the review and evaluation of curriculum and instructional materials to support continuous improvement.
  • Curriculum and instructional development
  • Prepare course outlines, lesson plans, and instructional materials as required.
  • Contribute to updates and improvements to course content in collaboration with program leadership.
  • Ensure instructional materials align with program outcomes, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
  • Policy and administration
  • Administer reference checks, criminal record checks, and other required compliance documentation.
  • Follow all college policies, including academic guidelines and student management procedures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to student attendance, performance, and evaluations.
  • Participate in administrative duties related to instruction and program delivery.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the College.

Qualifications

  • Education and experience
  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of recent, relevant experience as an LPN or RN.
  • Diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in nursing or a related field.
  • Teaching or training experience in an adult learning environment is considered an asset.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

Requirements

Candidates must hold an active LPN or RN license with at least 3 years of recent relevant experience and a nursing diploma or degree. Experience in adult education and proficiency with digital learning tools are highly valued.
