About the role

Provide child care and home support for families with children aged 0-4, including assistance with activities of daily living and light housekeeping. Offer emotional guidance and mentoring to parents recovering from medical crises or mental health issues like postpartum depression.

Pay Range

$22.42 - $25.17 (placement on salary range as per Collective Agreement)

VHA's Child and Family Support Worker (CFSW) is responsible for providing child care and home support to families caring with children from birth to 4 years, and recovering from a medical and/or crisis situation. They provide emotional support and guidance to parents struggling with mental health issues i.e. postpartum depression etc. The CFSW helps families with concrete childcare and home supports activities including light housekeeping and child care ADL’s. #INVHARCC

Key Areas of Accountability

VHA's s Child and Family Support Worker (CFSW) has the following key areas of accountabilities but not limmited to:

Provides care to children age 0-4 yrs old with all of their activities of daily living (ADLS).

Provides physical and emotional support to parent who are recovering from a medical health conditions in carry out normal household routines, or activities of daily living (such as light cleaning and laundry, child care).

Provides food planning and preparation, if needed

Ensures that meals are nutritious and takes into consideration special diets.

Provides a range of activities in caring for such as personal infant care such as bathing, changing diapers, and infant stimulation.

May be required to provide teaching and demonstration of caring activities to assist the parent (s) in learning to conduct these activities independently. Encourages the parent to do as much independently as possible.

Provides teaching and mentoring to first time parents in caring for newborns and /or special needs.

Provides emotional support and guidance in caring for multiple newborns i.e. establish routines, schedules.

Develops and plan educational and recreational activities that are age appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  • 2 years’ experience in childcare and/or international trained experience and/or
  • Certification in one of the following: Early Childhood Education Certificate/Diploma, Childcare Assistant, Mothercraft Childcare Certificate. Midwife, PSW Certificate recognized curriculum approved by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities or Ministry of Education, or international trained Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurse, Midwife or Physician
  • First AID/CPR Certificate is an asset
  • At least 1 year of experience working in the community.
  • Experience with mental health i.e. postpartum depression is an asset.
  • Experience in developing education and recreational activities age appropriate.
  • Experience working with children with special needs i.e. Autism.
  • Experience in teaching/mentoring new parents
  • Experience in and assistance with the preparation of nutrition meals – required.

Requires 2 years of childcare experience or a relevant certification such as Early Childhood Education, PSW, or international nursing/medical training. Must have at least 1 year of community work experience and proficiency in preparing nutritious meals.
