Position Overview

The Education Department at Driftpile Cree Nation is seeking a dedicated, full-time Special Education Teacher to join the Mihtatakaw Sipiy School team for the 2026-2027 school year. Located within the heart of the Boreal Forest, Mihtatakaw Sipiy School offers a comprehensive K-12 academic program enriched by unique Cree language and cultural components. Roles and Responsibilities

  • 1.
  • Develop individualized education plans (IPPs) based on the assessment results of these evaluations and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • 2.
  • Creating an engaging learning environment that meets individual student needs.
  • 3.
  • Design and implement a differentiated instruction program tailored to students’ specific needs.
  • 4.
  • Employ various pedagogical methods and resources to enhance students’ learning experiences.
  • 5.
  • Work in close collaboration with parents, tutors and other teachers and support staff to ensure that effective communication and support are provided for each student.
  • 6.
  • Monitor students’ progress and personalize educational strategies to harmonize with their needs and promote student success.
  • 7.
  • Create and keep detailed, up-to-date records of students’ achievements and difficulties.
  • 8.
  • Stay informed about current trends, techniques and best practices in special education.
  • 9.
  • Take part in professional development events and training sessions

Skills and Qualifications

  • 1.
  • Bachelor of Education with experience in Special Education Teaching degree and Alberta’s Teacher’s Certificate (or eligibility for) 2.
  • Evidence of progressive special education teaching experience 3.
  • Excellent understanding of differentiated instruction 4.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 5.
  • Ability to work with teachers to promote and deliver inclusive schooling 6.
  • Capacity to work in and respond to a demanding, fast-paced school environment 7.
  • Criminal Record Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check to be presented upon the interview 8.
  • Ability to speak Cree Language will be an asset
