About the role

The substitute will lead high-quality program planning and maintain safety and supervision for children aged 1-12. They will implement play-based educational programming and build healthy relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.

  • Schedule: On-call, Monday–Friday between 7:30am–6:00pm

This role is ideal for someone who is flexible, enjoys variety, and is passionate about supporting children’s development in a fun and engaging environment.

What you will do

  • As an On Call Child Care Substitute, you will support high-quality program delivery:
  • Assist in planning and delivering programs aligned with YMCA values (Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring, Inclusiveness)
  • Maintain safety and supervision in accordance with licensing requirements
  • Build positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues
  • Engage with children ages 1–12 as a play partner and homework helper
  • Support play-based learning including literacy, math, science, creative play, and physical activity
  • Promote inclusive, respectful interactions among children
  • Participate in YMCA community initiatives
  • What you bring
  • Minimum age of 19 (as per licensing standards) or ECE Assistant certification
  • Minimum 20 hours of training in child development, safety, or related fields (Responsible Adult Certificate)
  • Valid First Aid Certificate with CPR Level B or C
  • ECE-A, ECE, or Infant/Toddler certification (asset)
  • Reliable transportation
  • Valid Class 4 driver’s license (asset)

  • Provide three professional references
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search (within 6 months of start date)
  • Completion of YMCA training and onboarding requirements
