- Education Assistants participate as a valuable member of a team in the ongoing implementation of inclusive learning opportunities, and play a key role with the classroom teacher in maintaining a culture of equity and success for all students.</p><p><b><u>DUTIES:</u></b></p><p>1.
- Assists in developing students’ ability to access curriculum-based learning opportunities using universal/essential strategies with increasing independence.</p><p>2.
- Assists the teacher with the implementation of educational plans such as IEPs, AIPs, Safety Plans, and Positive Behaviour Support Plans, including ABA-based educational plans.</p><p>3.
- Provides basic personal care, such as feeding, dressing and toileting, administering medication, use of mobility devices, lift and transfer.</p><p>4.
- Implements individual medical care/nursing care plans in school- or community-based locations.</p><p>5.
- Maintains regular communications with the supervising teacher and other team members.</p><p>6.
- With guidance of classroom teacher/case manager, observes and records student progress, and maintains detailed written records (i.e., scatterplot, behaviour analysis, administration of medication).</p><p>7.
- Operates standard school, cafeteria/kitchen, and office equipment including computer applications, instructional aid communications, and special individualized equipment/technology</p><p>8.
- Participates with and supervises students in specialized or integrated settings, such as regular or resource classrooms, community-based life skills training, work experience sites, etc., and including activities in the gym, pool, playground, and other community sites.</p><p>9.
- Works with students with cognitive, behavioural, emotional, communication, sensory and/or physical, health challenges.</p><p>10.
- May be required to transport students.</p><p>11.
- Performs other duties as assigned.</p><p><b><u>QUALIFICATIONS:</u></b></p><p>1.
- Successful completion of a secondary school graduation program or equivalent.
- Completion of a recognized post-secondary education assistant program, including or supplemented by training related to specific diagnoses such as ASD, diabetes, chronic health impairment, conflict resolution, and non-violent crisis intervention.</p><p>2.
- 1 year recent, related experience specific to the needs of students with cognitive, behavioural, emotional, communication, sensory and/or physical, health challenges.</p><p>3.
- Proven ability to implement positive behaviour intervention techniques, as well as flexibility in response to student behaviours (e.g., adjusting and adapting strategies).</p><p>4.
- Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.</p><p>5.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of the classroom/specialized teacher.</p><p>6.
- Ability to operate a variety of office and school equipment including equipment specific to the needs of the student(s).</p><p>7.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and use judgement when providing information.</p><p>8.
- Ability to use patience, tolerance, and understanding in developing and maintaining a rapport with students, and in resolving problems or conflicts that may arise.</p><p>9.
- Remains current with changing technology, and diagnosis-specific approaches and equipment.</p><p>10.
- Knowledge of basic first aid.</p><p>11.
- Current CPI and Non Violent Crisis Intervention.</p><p>12.
- Knowledge of WorkSafe BC and WHMIS procedures and regulations.
- Safe work practices.</p><p>13.
- Some positions may require the knowledge of a language other than English.</p><p>14.
- Some positions may require Braille, Sign Language or deaf/blind-specific instructional communication strategies.</p><p>15.
