Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager of Early Years the Early Childhood Educator plans and delivers a high quality and culturally-based Early Years program. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide a stimulating, caring, and culturally appropriate early learning environment for children ages 18 months to 5 years. Share responsibility for planning, preparing, and implementing curriculum that fosters development across all developmental domains through a variety of group and individual activities. Recognize and respond to the individual needs of each child using developmentally appropriate teaching methods, behaviour guidance, and supportive strategies. Participate fully and consistently as a team member in the care of children and in the overall operation of the program centre. Prepare and complete weekly program plans and outdoor play plans, and ensure they are posted in the classroom. Be familiar with and follow the Early Years annual work plans. Demonstrate knowledge of and incorporate the principles of “How Does Learning Happen?”, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and the Six Head Start Components into programming. Observe, monitor, and track each child’s individual progress and development. Document and assess children’s development through observations and other approved methods. Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children at all times. Maintain constant supervision of children in accordance with program standards and licensing requirements. Mentor and support non-ECE educators in areas such as programming, child development, and effective program strategies. Understand and adhere to all regulations under the Early Learning and Child Care Act, including maintaining required child-to-staff ratios. Comply with all recording and reporting requirements outlined in Inuuqatigiit Centre’s Early Years Policies and Procedures (e.g., daily logs, incident reports, medication administration). Maintain program equipment in good condition and share responsibility for maintaining a clean and hygienic environment. Sanitize toys and materials as required and outlined in policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager. ACCOUNTABILITY Accountable for supporting and maintaining the health, safety, and well-being of children and staff within the program. Adhere to Inuuqatigiit Centre’s Early Years Policies and Procedures at all times. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all child, parent, and family-related information. Demonstrate effective time management, organization, and reliability in completing assigned responsibilities and program duties. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Develop and maintain positive and respectful relationships with children, parents, and families at Inuuqatigiit Centre. Build supportive and professional working relationships with Early Years staff and colleagues. Act as a positive role model, promoting professional values, respect, and ethical conduct within Inuuqatigiit Centre. Work collaboratively with staff to identify and resolve challenges that may arise in the delivery of programming. Actively participate as a member of the Early Years team, including attending team meetings and supporting fellow team members through open, respectful, and ongoing communication ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Must demonstrate stress resistance and stamina in caring for young children Regular physical activity associated with program activities. Always ensure personal safety and precautions Integrate the Inuit culture and language in all aspects of program responsibilities Mental effort is required to deal with stress related to safety and security of youth and delivery of programming and effectively deal with crisis KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Written and spoken fluency in Inuktitut an asset Knowledge of the needs of Inuit children, parents, and families. Knowledge of Inuit and non-Inuit community services and supports. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to operate computer systems and relevant software. Strong organizational, program planning, evaluation, fiscal management, and problem- solving skills. Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma Registration with the Ontario College of ECE. Knowledge of How Does Learning Happen document. Minimum one-year experience working with preschool/toddler age children. Inuit descent preferred. Fluency in Inuktitut an asset. Knowledge of the needs of Inuit children and families. Knowledge of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, culture, and practices. Minimum one-year experience working with Inuit or Indigenous communities. Enthusiasm, flexibility, dedication, and commitment to children. Knowledge of the needs of Inuit children and families. Ability to work in a collaborative staff team environment. Ability to function effectively in a high stress, high noise environment; First Aid/CPR certificate (or willingness to become certified) required. Current Police Record Check – Vulnerable Sector required in keeping with Inuuqatigiit Centre’s Personnel Policies and Procedures.
