The Lifesaving Instructor and Examiner teaches and examines specific course content, using Lifesaving Society and YMCA equipment, resources and materials. Instructors develop course lesson plans that incorporate different learning styles.

In This Role, You Will

  • Teach in the aquatic area, ensure all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to, and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
  • Deliver course content and examine participants following established Lifesaving Society criteria
  • Plan, organize and implement course lesson plans.
  • Recognize participant learning styles and delivers content accordingly.
  • Coach and develop participants to meet success.
  • Ensure qualifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times.
  • Actively participate in scheduled programs, meetings and special events.
  • In collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers and YMCA program staff, assist and encourage program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.
  • Perform other related duties to fulfill commitment to quality programs for all members as assigned from time to time by supervisor

  • Examiner in one or more of the following: National Lifeguard, Instructor Trainer
  • Previous experience Instructing Lifesaving Courses an asset
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with participants
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, including early mornings, days, evenings and weekends
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
